Jon stared at Miss Johnson shocked. He has a 16 year old daughter? But why didn’t Susi tell him?
“Are these the only hints you have?” Dot asked.
“Unfortunately, yes, Mrs. Bongiovi. The girl was never been told who her father is, even though she asked her mother a couple times” Miss Johnson replied.
“What now?” Jon stuttered. Dot looked at him surprised. He was completely out of balance.
“Well, we’ve been contacted from our collogues in Germany, who found the certificated of birth and taking care of the girl right now. She has no other relatives, and even if there would be any….you are her father….well, at least we think you are. Would you agree to make a paternity test?”
“Yes.” Jon said without hesitation.
“Ok, could you meet me today at 4 pm at the public health office? They already took a sample from the girl and analized it, we will compare the result with your test and then we know.”
“When can I see her?” Jon asked a bit worried.
“Our collogues will fly with her to the USA as soon as we know that you are her father…don’t worry, they are taking good care of her in the home right now.” She assured him.
“Yeah, right!” Dot snorted.
Miss Johnson glared at her. “She has a roof over head and gets food, that’s all that counts.” Miss Johnson said sternly.
“Sometimes that’s not enough.” Dot said bitter. She had worked with a lot of kids from homes in her dojo, giving them free lessons, helping them to deal with the fear especially some girls have, and she knew what those kids really needed, was someone who loves them, but somehow those people from the DCFS didn’t seem to get it.
“I think everything is said so far” Miss Johnson got up with a clearly disapproving glance at Dot. “I’ll see you at 4 pm” she looked at Jon.
“Yes, let me take you outside.” He walked her to the door.
A couple minutes later Jon re-entered the kitchen carefully. He had no idea how Dot would react to all this. But he expect the worse. People were always saying that he had a bad temper, well they never saw Dot when she was really mad and that combined with her karate skills was a deadly mixture…...to his surprise she was still sitting at the table, looking at him patiently, there was no anger in her eyes. Ok….that’s scary too, he thought.
After Jon and Miss Johnson left the kitchen, Dot started thinking about everything. She realized rather fast that she didn’t have any right to be angry at Jon. He didn’t know that the girl was pregnant, she probably didn’t know it either when she left the States. But most importantly Jon and her weren’t together at that time. They had seperated after a fight and Jon came back at mid december begging her to try it again. They never really talked about what happened in this couple weeks they weren’t together, but she dated in this time and always assumed Jon did it too. Well, she was right.
“Tell me about Susan, Jon.” She asked calmly.
“We haven’t been together at that time, remember Dot, we broke up shortly after Halloween that year.” Jon said nervously.
“I know that Jon.” He looked at her surprised.
“I’m not angry. You didn’t know that she was pregnant, right?” Jon shook his head no.
Dot walked towards Jon and put her arms around his neck, so she could look him deeply in the eyes. “I know you, Jon. If you’d known, you would have been there for the kid, even if that would have meant that we probably wouldn’t be back together. You ain’t one of those guys who run away from their responsiblities.”
“Yeah” he barely whispered, cleared his throat and started talking.
“I met Susi in a bar at the boardwalk, she was on her own, doing vacation here after she graduated. She told me that she always dreamt about coming here and her parents fulfilled her dream, even if it was rather expensive for them. She was 19 or 20 at that time. We talked all night. She was talking about her family and I talked…”
He hesitated shortly “…about you.” Dot looked up surprised.
“In the last two weeks she was here we met daily, we went to NYC several times…and spent some time in her hotel room.” Jon flushed lightly. Never thought he would be able to tell Dot about that time.
“Well, the day she left, she told me that I should try to see you again. I talked so much about you that she realized how badly I still love you. I was a bit shocked when she told me…but as so often I wasn’t able to see clearly through my feelings” Jon added slightly grinning.
Dot nodded. Yeah, she already knew that problem and she was surprised. That girl told him to go back to her….wow!
“And you are sure that it is your kid…I mean, she could have been already pregnant or got it shortly after she went home?” Dot asked curious.
Jon smiled softly. “No, I’m sure she wasn’t already pregnant.” Dot gave him a questining look.
“Jon, …with all my respect, but you didn’t realize that I was pregnant till I showed you the picture from the ultrasound and at that time my belly was already visible…you ain’t no expert when it comes down to that.”
Jon smiled softly remembering the moment Dot told him about Steph. “Yeah, but this is different….” He stopped briefly. “…I was her first.” He added.
“Oh, ….ok, that’s a hint, ….you are right.” Dot said a little bit surprised.
Jon pulled her slowly into his arms, not sure it would be ok for her. Dot smiled and gave him a small kiss. He breathed out relieved and held her even closer, buring his head in her hair. They were standing like that, holding each other, making sure that the other one was more or less alright, for a couple minutes.
“What do we do now, Dot?” He was still confused and had no idea what to do next.
“Well, you go to the doctor today and I go grocery shopping and pick the kids up from school, then all we can do is wait. If I’m not mistaken it’ll take a few days till we get the result.” Dot softly caressed Jons cheek
“Baby, calm down…I know it is hard for you that you can do nothing else but wait…” Jon sighed and nodded “…but that’s what we have to do now!” Dot said.
“Ok” Jon said. Dot walked to the kitchen door “Dotty…” She turned around. “I love you.” She smiled at him. “I love you too, Johnny.”
